FLEXIBILITY – Be willing to do things differently Recognize what’s not working and be willing to change what you’re doing to achieve your goal.
Flexibility is the willingness to try something different when we realize that what we’re doing isn’t working. Many times a day we are faced with situations that are different from what we had originally planned. One way to deal with these situations is to be rigid and continue to do things in the same way over and over—another is to handle them with flexibility. Being flexible is responding to changing or new situations in ways that move us forward.
1st Grade
When choosing math work stations or Daily 5 rounds, the station kids want is often full. When we start work stations we discuss the fact that we need to keep flexibility in mind when choosing stations.
2nd Grade
Second grade is demonstrating flexibility almost every day. With the schedule changes that were made to accommodate the upper grades during testing second grade students showed flexibility with adjusting to the changes.
During Daily 5 students demonstrate flexibility when they have to make an alternate choice of literacy tasks when their first choice is taken.
Students are also flexible when math and reading partners are absent and they have to find another group or partner to work with.
3rd Grade
STEM Projects - Chair Caddy, Astronomy - After students completed individual designing and planning for product, they were asked to work within a team to create a final product. Students shared their ideas with the team members and a final product was then created. Students understood their ideas may or may not be used in the final product.
4th Grade
- For walk to learn - we have many students who are working on multiple math/reading/writing concepts and friend groups and classes are mixed up. Helping students understand that they need to be flexible when working with new students, new teachers and they might not be in the group they originally wanted.
Daily 5 sessions - when checking out for a session of Daily 5 many students enjoy using computers for writing, word work and listening to reading but we have a limited number of computers in the class at one time. Students learn flexibility when they are asked to pick a different session than their original choice.
5th Grade
With the myriad of special events and field trips we have in fifth grade, students learn to practice flexibility as far as schedule changes go.
Do something "fun", kids get a kick when you do something silly/we need to let loose sometimes...
Specials
MusicMusic is so multifaceted that flexibility is vital to student musicians. We learn different parts on different instruments, and then each student rotates through several different parts. Students need to know each part on each instrument, which quickly exposes students to flexibility in the music classroom. Art Be willing to do things differently. Art is all about being flexible. The students learn right away that there is no right way in art. Sometimes they need to back up and do something different. They need to be flexible when the painting or color did not work out. They need to look for another way to complete the project.
Support
The Library is a busy area of the school! It is used weekly by all students for regularly scheduled classes. Additionally, it is used for meetings, mentoring, research, testing, and enrichment work for students. It is frequently necessary for regular library classes to to be super-quiet when the library is being used by an additional group. Additionally, the "extra" users of the library are respectful of the regular classes.
Special Education
Our students receive support which requires them to be flexible many times in their day. Support may require students to leave their classroom and work with many different staff members to meet their unique needs. Upon returning to their classroom during instruction, our students show great flexibility to assimilate back into the class.
